Why is recycling important?

If plastic waste is mismanaged, meaning not managed properly (e.g. thrown away or inadequately disposed of) there is a high risk of plastic material entering the environment including oceans, polluting coastlines and beaches as well as harming (marine) animals and humans.

Mismanaged plastic waste

Mismanaged plastic waste can either be inadequately disposed or littered:

  • Inadequately disposed waste should have been managed through waste collection or storage site properly but ultimately it was disposed of in dumps or uncontrolled landfills, meaning there is a high risk that the material leaks into nature.
  • Littered waste describes plastics that are dumped or disposed of in the environment.

In order to protect the environment and to preserve natural resources, the correct recovery, recycling and disposal of plastic waste is important. By re-using and recycling plastic products and waste as many times as possible the lifespan of plastics is improved. Recycling also helps to avoid carbon emissions.
