How to measure your plastic waste

It is recommended to assess the overall plastic waste generated in your business and its impacts to be able to implement bespoke measures and eventually reduce your plastic waste volume.

How to identify the areas where (single-use) plastic products are used

IDENTIFY WHERE PLASTIC WASTE IS GENERATED

Walk around the hotel / premises / join one of your excursions offered and compile a checklist to identify WHERE and WHY plastic products are used.

1

CONSIDER BRAND STANDARDS

Consider any current brand standards that are in place. For example, is there a brand standard regulating the amount of plastic bottles given to customers or the use of single-use plastic cutlery?

2

LOOK AT ALL AREAS

Measure the amount of plastic waste in all business areas, from operational departments, offices, over packaging and marketing / promotional materials to kitchen/canteen/restaurant/, laundry and garden/ recreational area.

3

CONSIDER ALL ITEMS USED WITHIN 1 YEAR

Calculate all plastic items purchased in the previous year/ last 12 months, also integrating the stock lists. Take the number of guests for this year into consideration, so that you can calculate the plastic items consumed per guest night.
